Member Posts: 15 ![]() | Hunted Sat AM--no deer seen. Moved to another stand that I have tons of pics of deer moving thru from 6:00-7:45 AM and 5:30-7:15 PM for PM hunt and only saw one doe eating at an apple tree 57 yards away...shoulda set-up closer dang-it. Holy sweat city....I think I destroyed my Scent Blocker suit with all of the sweating. Sun AM--sat in stand I sat in last evening and only saw 2 does eating at that same apple tree. They never visited the 3 apple trees in my shooting range. Checked the camera that was located at my Sat AM stand and had 3 does Sat evening at 6:25 PM and a 9 pointer at 7:09 PM. Coulda earned my buck and got it the same evening. DDDOOOOHHHHH!!! Will not hunt again in Iowa county, WI until sometime in October. It was a nice weekend to get out and do some camping though! Buddy shot over a doe on Saturday evening on the same property. Had his 50 yard pin on the deer...didn't have time to range her in this situation. When he got down he ranged it back to the stand....44 yards. Oops.

Veteran Posts: 126 ![]() ![]() | Saturday a.m. - Did not hunt in order to get stands up on the new property in Erin, WI. Saturday p.m. - Left the woods to settle down and spent the evening in my stand in Delafield, WI. Saw 20 turkeys and a couple of squirrels. Had one little red squirrel run up to my feet and look at me - reminded me of the red squirrel from "Over The Hedge". . . Quick little buggers. I video taped him, pretty good footage. Climbed down with little light left only to enter the field (my stand is 10 feet in woodline) to see 5 does and a small basket buck 40 yards away coming right towards me. One saw me and blew, they made their way to the middle of the field and she continued blowing, yet they couldn't make out what I was, so I was fortunate enough to walk along the woodline and out of there without spooking them too bad. Sunday a.m. - Sat in Erin for sunrise with brother in-law. Saw well over 75 turkeys, different ones at that. Stand is situated along the edge of woods with marsh behind them, an alf-alfa field before me and a soy bean and winter wheat field to my left within a small proximity. Gorgeous sunrise behind the beautiful Holy Hill. Again, I video taped a lot, including some great shots of turkey's flying from there roost and landing in the field. . . No deer this morning, but the trail cam told a tale of what could have happened had I spent the prior evening in stand. Oh well, lot of season ahead of us. Back out to Delafield stand tonight - hopefully that buck I've been posting trail shots of lately will show up. A Rage in the cage is on the menu I hope! Veteran Posts: 126 ![]() ![]() | Shot small buck last night. A 7 pointer with a 2 inch kicker coming off his base that resembles a finger laying over his forehead making him an 8 pointer. He's young, but he's a cull buck for my Delafield property. Not a bad way to start the season, going to have a euro mount done for him to show off the neat kicker. More bucks to come, this just gets the dust off the ol' bow. Now it's time to get picky and selective and wait that big one out. I'll post a pic or two.

Veteran Posts: 126 ![]() ![]() | 25-06, you are right, I apologize, I didn't realize how that sounded. I drew a tag in Illinois this year to hunt on a buddies farm near Ashburn in Pike County - I'll be spending a week during the rut down there. In the mean time, to keep myself getting back out in the woods this fall, I'm doe hunting. Last night my brother in-law and I spend the evening on stand in Erin. Turkey everywhere, but no deer until 7:30 with no light left. Had to wait till blackness to climb down and sneak out of there. THA4, I'll post a pic or two tonight.

Veteran Posts: 126 ![]() ![]() | I'll post it, but I'm telling you he's not a giant. He's a 2 year old cull buck and no fair picking on me cause he's not the one shot in Antigo. It's like posting a pic of a cookie cutter ski, but I'll put it up.

Regular Posts: 71 ![]() ![]() | I will be sitting in the corn filming my buddy on Saturday evening. With the beans starting to turn yellow, the alfalfa is going to be the hot spot. We've got a couple of pond sets too ready to rock if the weather gets too hot. I will be sure to put out updates of the action and hopefully a pic of a big buck down!

Member Posts: 28 ![]() | Sam I am curious as to why you consider it a cull buck? Nice going regardless.

Veteran Posts: 126 ![]() ![]() | Understandable. The term isn't my preference, rather the farmer and his son's who allow me to hunt with them. They are very, how should I put it. . . Let's just say "specific" about which bucks they want breeding does and which ones they don't. Something to do with symetry and tine length at this age. . . I think they have been watching too many Drury Outdoors DVD's. We start every season, or at least the last 4 years I've been hunting there getting together for some beers and looking over all the trail cam footage we've collected from around the property. They select a few deer every year they would like to see culled from the herd if it's within range. Because I've shot 2 large deer off their land and passed on those "cullers" to get them, I elected to take one this year to please them, which it seemed to. Good eats, but bye bye to my Wisconsin buck tag:(

Member Posts: 28 ![]() | Understandable Sam. Thanks for the explanation. I am by no means a hunting expert and am trying to learn what I can about deer management. I would have given that deer one more year to see what it would have been as a 3-year old before I called it a cull buck or not. If the “manager” says cull then cull as you did. He gets his deer culled out, and you get some vension and a happy landowner so that you can hunt the land more in the future.

Veteran Posts: 126 ![]() ![]() | Exactly, that's why I was a little shy to post pic. Ate the inner tender loins last night, they were AWESOME!! Travis, I think your perspective is the best approach. So if you're interested in learning more about deer management, don't go by my landowners perspective by any means, I agree with your point of view. He showed potential after I got close up to him.. maybe not the longest tines yet, but he had that inch and a half kicker coming of the left base (his right) and some dandy G1's for such a youngster - he could have blown up in a year, you never know.

Veteran Posts: 126 ![]() ![]() | Shot a big doe last night, she came in with 5 minutes of shooting time left. I actually just snapped on my waist pack and threw the camera bag over my shoulder. As I picked up my bow (hunting from ground last night, bow leaning on tree as I gathered my things) I saw them coming in. Four in the group, two big does and two yearlings. At 20 yards broadside, I filled my doe tag near Holy Hill. Couldn't have been a better setting, Holy Hill directly behind her, the setting sun behind the castle of a church. . . She went 30 yards and dropped. The two fawns ran off with the other big doe... Until November, I'll be camera man Sam for my buddies and bro in-law, a great excuse to get back in the woods.

Regular Posts: 61 ![]() ![]() Location: Wisconsin | Hunted in Bayfield county this past week. My Buddy is a bear guide so I thought I could get a good week away to help him out, plus log a few hours in the stand after getting his customers into their bear stands. Wednesday and Thursday we were too busy with the bear side of things to do any deer hunting but Friday was going to be my day and I was ready, so I thought? I had put quite a few arrows though the bow this spring, summer and early fall so as far as I was concerned I was DNO and would just put an arrow or two through it before I headed out Friday evening to make sure and that's when it all went to crap. I was all over the place. After screwing around for a couple of hours trying to get the bow kill ready again I finally gave up and decided to a have a few and drink my sorrows away for the evening. Saturday moring and a good hangover some how got me focused and I finally got all my problems fixed and was ready to go for Saturday night. Around 5:15 on Saturday afternoon I headed out to a 2 acre food plot and a 6x6 box blind. I sat for about a hour and a nice doe came out. I let the G5 Tekan broadhead fly and the rest is history. Now the freezer has some fresh meat in it and I can spend some time looking for the big boy. Well sorry that got a little long winded and all for a doe but now it's time to make some jerky.

Veteran Posts: 126 ![]() ![]() | Out again last night, and what a gorgeous sunset it was! 2 dozen turkeys in the field before me before I hoisted the bow up to my stand. Not a deer to be heard or seen, but plenty to keep me interested as always. Back out this evening.

Member Posts: 15 ![]() | Have not dropped a reports in a while as I have not seen a deer (while hunting) in a while and have been working WAY too many hours/days. Was out Sunday AM and had 2 'coons and 3 squirrels around. Could only hunt until 8:00 as I had to get to work. I am seeing more sign each time out. Will have Thursday-Sunday to bag a buck in Iowa County, WI as I earned my buck tag during the antlerless gun hunt on October 15th.....my last day I had off work!!! On that day I was able to rattle 2 different bucks about 250 yards across a CRP field to within 20 yards. that was fun! Can't wait to do it with my bow in hand!!

![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | On my way out to the backyard stand tonight. hard call what to do...I have several exceptional bucks hitting the stand, but absolutely NO room for another 'trophy' in or out of the house. I guess I'll make the decision when I see what I see! There's one buck with zero horns that's for sure at least a yearling and doesn't have more than 1". he's darned hard to shoot, busts me all the time. If I get the chance, he's in the freezer.

Member Posts: 8 ![]() | Monday morning got to watch the buck parade on a steady rain all morning. Got in my tree at 0515 and at 0550 I hear a buck blow an alert off in the distance. Seconds later I see a shooter 10 pt (140-150") come smoking past my stand with a basket six right behind him. Couldn't get him to stop. Ten min later another sm six goes by. Twenty min and another pair of small bucks. Then another couple bucks meandering solo in the next hour. One litttle guy c ame to the bottom of my ladder only to closely inspect it by sniffing and licking it. He even looked up at me but no reaction, very cool even though he was small. A couple of small yearlings were the first does to make an appearance at about 0845. By 1000 hrs the buck count was nine and does two. As I climbed down my ladder at about 1100 off in a grassy field about 150 ydsr away I see a big 8 pt also 140"ish chasing a doe around.this buck has been caught on my trail cam and has a feet spherical looking rack. Waited on them a bit till they were off in the distance they never came back. All of this is a steady solid rain. I was a bit surprised by that but what a cool hunt considering I woke up to the rain and had to convince myself it was worth going out and I never even got a shot off. So it goes to show you that you never know what your going to see on any given day. Now back to the 8 pr spherobuck Edited by karloutdoors 11/18/2009 8:29 AM
